Mr. Fernandez is a highly regarded legal professional who has garnered 63 years of experience in the field. He entered the industry after serving in the United States Navy reserves from 1944 to 1946 and obtaining the necessary law credentials. He joined Hawkins Delafield & Wood LLP in 1950 and served as a lawyer for the firm for 10 years before he was promoted to partner in 1960. The firm valued Mr. Fernandez’s leadership and extensive experience in the industry so much so that he served as partner until 1994 and was again promoted to of counsel. In his position, Mr. Fernandez is responsible for drafting documents, handling business development, and serving in a senior advisory role for the law practice.

During his tenure at the law firm, Mr. Fernandez has tried numerous high-profile cases and acted as Bond Counsel for Alaska, Washington, North Dakota, as well as municipalities, public authorities and special district issuers in multiple other states, and for the government of the Virgin Islands. He has also represented financial institutions and trust companies in various states across the country. Mr. Fernandez played a lead role in drawing legislation for the New York City Housing Development Corporation in 1970, and participated in the restructuring of rescue of New York indebtedness. He is currently trying a case in Maine relating to the moral obligation of public debt. Aside from his work at the firm, Mr. Fernandez authored “A New Look at Gold Clauses in Municipal Bonds,” and conducts public speaking engagements in order to share his knowledge with other industry professionals. In 1990, he attended the Moscow Conference on Law and Economic Cooperation.

For his exceptional service in the field, Mr. Fernandez was honored with award for Recognition for 60 Years of Service by the Nassau County Bar Association, and Special Achievement Award by The Municipal Forum of New York. Mr. Fernandez keeps abreast of changes and advancements in the industry through his affiliation with the Nassau County Bar Association, New York City Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, Municipal Bond Club of New York, The Municipal Forum of New York, The American Bar Association, and Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.

Mr. Fernandez earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government at Brown University, a Bachelor of Legal Letters at St. John’s University, and a specialization in local government law at New York University School of Law. He attributes his success to his hard work, education and military service.
